Interviewing clients, avoiding anyone who wasn’t a client, and burying herself at her desk, filled her days. The only texts she answered were from Jake. She knew if she didn’t, he would be on his way to her house, ready to pull her out of her angry rut.

“Sweetness,” Jake called.

Angelina groaned. There was nowhere to hide. She needed to add herself to the client list. The barn needed a secret escape hatch.

“Oh sweetness, you look like shit,” Jake told her.

“Thank you,” she smiled sweetly. “I try hard.”

“Girl, try harder.”

“Is she up there?” Max yelled.

“What’s left of her is,” Jake answered.

“I knew we shouldn’t have left her alone this long.”

That secret escape hatch was moving to the top of the list. Right next to the laundry room remodel and the burning of her mattress.

“No word from Army Ken?”

“Have you been eating nothing but drive-through?” Max stopped beside her garbage can with his arms crossed over his chest. “You came into town to get food, and you didn’t let me feed you.”

Angelina shrunk back to focus on the computer monitor.

“Back to my question,” Jake turned her chair to face him. “Where is Army Ken?”

She steeled herself. It was time for the discussion she had been avoiding. “No idea.”

“He hasn’t tried to text you?” Max demanded.

“Calm down, love of my life. I am sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.”

“Yeah. He moved on to the next woman,” Angelina rolled her eyes.

Jake and Max stared expectantly at her.

“I don’t know what to tell you other than he left when he got what he wanted. Do you know if there is a seamstress close by to get those letters cut out? If not, I am sure I can find them online. I am thinking of starting a club.”

“Oh, honey, why didn’t you call me?” Jake gave her a pitying look.

“This is why. I don’t need anyone to make me feel worse than I already do. No, poor Angelina looks. I am a big girl. If the guy I sleep with has another woman on the side that calls him in the middle of the night to demand his help, that is my problem. When she shows up at my front door with a picture of their baby, that’s on me for being stupid enough to believe a five could get a nine.”

“Doesn’t make sense,” Max muttered.

“You are correct,” she shrugged, ignoring Max’s growl. “It doesn’t. The facts are I slept with him, and he took a call in the middle of the night. Ben packed his bag and left. Jenna wasn’t a figment of my imagination.”

“Why?”

Angelina looked at him blankly.

“He didn’t come right out and say he was leaving you for another woman?” Max asked, deep in thought.

“Does it matter?” Jake replied. “Sweetness rocked his world. He split. Then his baby momma wife shows up, crushing our girl.”

“Has he contacted you?”

“No.”
