Angelina’s brain came to a screeching halt. “You are going to have to try that one more time.”

“My wives will love you. The house is set up for four distinct homes, each leading into the common area.”

“You have more than one wife. You are a polygamist,” Angelina gaped.

“I have three wives, but there is always room for more love. Someone is missing, and that someone is you.”

“Huh,” she managed. Educated, successful, and usually calm under pressure, and the best she could do was huh.

“Does that mean you will consider it?”

“No. Nope. Hard pass. Not now, not later. All good without three other women to share my man with. I understand you are into it. It’s just not my thing,” she rambled.

“Are you sure?”

Angelina wasn’t sure how many more ways she could say no. “Absolutely one hundred percent not interested.”

“Are you a lesbian? Isabella likes variety.”

“Progressive polygamists,” Angelina nodded, amazed. “Great for you. Still not for me.”

“Would you consider it?”

“No.”

“Oh,” Cort sighed.

“Listen, I’m not judging. I’m just saying that lifestyle isn’t for me. I will understand if you want to find someone else to make plans for your home.”

“No,” he shook his head. “Those are two separate things. We want the house with the changes you and I discussed.”

“We can do that. Two separate things,” she reiterated. “I will let you know when I finish making the requested changes. I do have one other suggestion.”

“Does it offer a change of mind? Possibly a reasonable timetable to consider what we could have together.”

“If you are looking for another wife, wife number four,” she paused. Her mind still wasn’t wrapped around their family dynamics. “You have multiple mothers-in-law. I assume they are coming to visit. I am sure it would go a long way to have an extra in-law suite or two.”

“I could get brownie points with Emily’s mother,” Cort focused on the page. “I want two of them.”

“I will make those changes,” she agreed. An hour and another page of notes later, the plan for in-law suits was complete.

“I look forward to hearing from you,” Cort shook her hand, holding it just a moment too long. “If you reconsider-”

“Still not interested,” Angelina ushered him toward the door.

Rolling the door open, she waited until Cort was in his SUV before she closed it. She flopped into a chair at the conference table. She looked at her notes and the drawing still pinned to the board. How had she not seen this was a polygamist house? It was a multi-family house. She had been right about that. Mark that on the calendar. One thing right today.

Chapter 11

“Shorty,” Ben called.

He searched through the house only to come up empty. It was dark. The lights were still on in the barn. How the woman worked that many hours without eating or taking a break was beyond him. It was going to stop. She was going to eat. She would either start taking care of herself, or he would make sure she did.

Jogging up the stairs, his heart stopped when he found her. Angelina was lying on the floor in her office. She wasn’t moving.

“Angelina.” He raced to her, dropping to his knees beside her.

“I’m fine,” she whispered. Ignoring Ben was hard. Was it a crime to have five minutes to herself after a day like today?
