Both men froze before turning toward her, immediately letting their hands fall apart.

“It isn’t what it looks like,” Jake groaned.

“Are you brothers?”

Max was four inches taller and blond. His skin was tanned, but it would never reach the dark tones of Jake’s. Angelina wasn’t sure how the genetic code went, but she was fairly certain ethnicity got passed down. Unless they were step-siblings, it wasn’t looking good for her.

“No.”

“Best friends?”

“Kind of.”

“You have to spell this out for me because I can see you two care about each other. What I cannot see is why I am here.”

“Tell her,” Max urged. “She is smart, and she has a good heart. She’ll understand.”

Someone yelled Max’s name from across the room. Snapping his head in that direction, Max groaned. An angry patron was calling for him.

“Go. Take care of your business,” Jake urged. “I will take care of this. We can talk about it at home later.”

“Fine,” Max relented. “Open your own place they said. It will be great,” he grumbled under his breath as he stomped off to deal with the issue.

“Let me get you a drink.”

“All right, but then you are telling me what is going on, or else I am leaving.”

Jake nodded. Angelina watched as he made his way behind the bar. He looked at home as he mixed her a blue tropical slushy drink and added an extra pineapple skewer before carrying it back to the table. She took a sip and waited.

“Okay,” Jake blew out a nervous breath. “I’m gay.”

“Say it isn’t so,” Angelina chuckled. “Are you looking for a third? Like the jelly between your toast?”

Jake’s mouth twitched.

“I have to say this is a first. I have never been out with a guy looking for someone to complete their love triangle.”

“Whoever gets you will need big balls and a lot of patience,” Jake laughed. “I love that about you.”

“Um, thanks. I think.”

“Sweetheart, I am a gay man. We are not looking for any jelly. I am thrilled being toast on toast, as you put it.”

“Why are you dating? You and Max look so in love. Why would you want to mess that up?”

“I can’t deny it. I love that man. He is it for me. However, my father doesn’t see it that way.”

“What? Why?”

“He made his millions on television evangelism. Preaching about the evils of the world to the masses who sent him money to save their poor souls.”

“If word got out that his son was gay,” Angelina trailed off as understanding started to take root. She had no idea who Jake’s dad was. She didn’t take time to watch TV often. If she did, that wouldn’t be the channel she would pick. She had nothing against religion. Angelina disagreed with the whole dog and pony show they splashed all over the television, especially when monetary donations paved the path to salvation.

“You understand the first part.” Jake laced his fingers through hers. “I need you to hear me out on the second part.”

“Oh shit.”

“It isn’t that bad,” Jake winced.
