“Where are you from?”

“Here and there,” Ben evaded.

“No one is going to miss you for a few months?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Got your conversation skills in the Army too?”

“You could say that.”

Jake’s phone broke their conversation. Glancing at it, he groaned. “Sorry, sweetness. I am going to have to take this.”

“Go ahead, but I don’t want to hear you bitching about how I work anymore.”

Quinn’s lips twitched as Jake took his call to the front porch.

“What’s he do?” Ben asked.

“He owns the law firm in town,” Angelina beamed.

“Huh.”

“Is there a problem?”

“Nope.”

“Good because we are happy.”

“Huh,” Ben grunted again.

Quinn’s lips twitched again. He eyed his daughter and Ben without saying a word.

“Sweetness, I’m sorry, but I must cut our night short. I will make it up to you tomorrow. Max, I can give you a ride back into town so Angelina doesn’t have to.”

“Not a problem,” Angelina tossed her napkin on the table beside her plate. “I promised to do the dishes anyway.”

She followed Jake out the front door pulling it closed behind him.

“Work?” Angelina asked.

“Yeah, one of my retainer clients,” Jake sighed.

“The one?” Max asked. The wine was tucked protectively in his arm.

“It’s always the one,” Jake confirmed.

“It’s fine,” she assured them. “I’m going to do the dishes and probably get back to work myself. Thank you for making a wonderful dinner, Max.”

Angelina leaned up on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek.

“Wait, aren’t you supposed to be my girlfriend? I know I haven’t had one, but I think you are supposed to kiss my cheek, not my man’s,” Jake teased.

“I suppose, my greedy boyfriend.”

She leaned up as Jake bent down to her level so she could kiss his cheek.

“Not the same,” Jake sighed.
