Page 8 of Tempting Reese

“I talked to my old man today,” Cash broke the silence.

“Oh yeah,” Reese wasn’t sure she wanted to know what that discussion entailed. She figured she was about to find out whether she wanted to or not. Like she hadn’t had enough family drama today.

“He had a real nice shiner. Said you gave it to him.”

“Oh yeah.”

“Have to admit I was kind of pissed I missed that,” Cash smirked.

“I am sure if you ask some people around town, you can get the play-by-play from the gossip mill. Someone might even have gotten it on video with their phone.”

“He isn’t going to be laying a finger on you ever again. I didn’t think it was possible, but that old man is more of an asshole than when I left.”

“I know. I don’t work there anymore, and I sure as hell will not be going as a patron.”

“Did you find another job today?”

Reese sighed. It didn’t look like he was leaving anytime soon, but he did bring her beer. At least that was a point in his favor. He sat close but didn’t touch her. That was good too. Watching him get pinched by her porch was funny, not that she was going to tell him. What would it hurt to sit here and finish her beer beside the hot guy from next door? It wasn’t like she was going to sleep with him. Good lord, she had to stop this and stop it soon before she did one of the stupid things.

“No, I didn’t have time today.”

“Is your grandfather here to visit, or is he here to stay?”

“Here to stay.”

“Are you not much of a talker, or is it just me?” Cash asked, turning much more carefully this time to look at her.

“Just a crappy day, I guess,” Reese admitted. She couldn’t come right out and tell him he had to leave because it wasn’t like he would listen. “I don’t usually talk about my personal life to anyone other than Pappy and sometimes Mav.”

“You got a good kid.”

“Yeah, he is,” Reese smiled.

“Woman, you should smile more often.”

“It’s Reese, not woman or beautiful, just Reese.”

“Since I am the one looking at you, Reese, I am going to call you whatever I want. You may as well get used to it,” Cash tucked a piece of her hair caught in the evening breeze behind her ear. “Woman, you are without a doubt beautiful.”

“What are you doing here? What is it that you want?” Reese frowned at him. He wasn’t leaving on his own. It was time to help him along.

“Is this some kind of ploy to get me to sleep with you? I can save you the effort. It isn’t going to happen. Do you have some kind of white knight syndrome? Let me help you with that by giving you a clue. The single mother next door doesn’t need anyone to swoop in and save her. She has been holding things together just fine for the past seven years without any help. This little bump in the road isn’t going to change anything. I don’t need your dick. I don’t need your money. What I need is for you to take yourself back across the street and stay there.”

“Damn,” Cash threw his head back laughing. “Guess you told me.”

“Go home,” Reese grumbled.

When he didn’t move, she decided to remedy the situation herself. Standing to go inside, she grabbed her bottle and his as he lifted it to take a drink.

“Beautiful, I wasn’t done with that,” Cash said, holding on to her arm.

Reese stopped, looking down into his charcoal eyes. Those knowing eyes held hers captive. Reese tried to move, but her body wasn’t listening. The current flowing from his skin into hers had her pulse quickening. One good tug from him had her stumbling into his lap.

“What are you doing?” Reese squealed, trying unsuccessfully to get away from him.

“Calm down, Reese. I am not going to hurt you.”

“What do you want from me?” She asked quietly, not giving up on the hope of escaping her current predicament without something else happening. She held her body stiff while she sat across his lap.
