“Have you no shame?”

“Nope,” he smiled, popping his lips at her. “Coffee, my kitten?”

“Yes, please,” she admitted and turned to get a coffee cup out of the cabinet – only to feel him slap her butt cheek. She nearly dropped the cup in surprise as she looked at him in shock.

“Sorry. Thought there was a bug.”

“Uh huh…”

He smiled at her tenderly and leaned forward, dropping a soft kiss on the tip of her nose.

“I’m the bug.”

“I figured.”

“Get it… a pest?”

“Oh, I get it,” she chuckled, turning and starting the Keurig – only to feel a pat on her cheek again. “Is that pesky bug back?”

“Vicious little sucker…” Max chuckled in delight, walking up behind her and hugging her. “Have I mentioned that I really like the idea of us?”

“You should probably tell me that more often,” she teased, smiling and marveling at this playful side so early in the morning, and she hesitated, quickly glancing at the stove where he’d put the skillet back on the burner. It was smoking.

“Max…”

“Meh, I’ll eat it,” he shrugged. “Right now, I’m cuddling with my girl.”

“Max,” she laughed. “You aren’t going to eat that, and what if the smoke detectors go off?”

“We’ll open the windows and doors; besides, they are not necessarily the best cooks on base. I mean, sometimes you get a meal that is simply divine, but most of the time, it’s edible but nothing to write home about.”

Elana pulled herself out of Max’s arms and quickly flipped the French toast, grimacing at the amount of charring she saw on one side. Shaking her head, she grabbed the handle and turned to scrape it off into the trash – only to have Max freak out.

“What are you doing?” he balked – and plucked the piece of toast off the skillet in disbelief, looking at her. “That’s perfectly edible and…” Before her eyes – he folded the square of half-cooked French toast and crammed nearly half of it in his mouth. “… Tastes fine.”

“That’s disgusting.”

“What?” he chewed, smirking. “It’s crispy on one side and moist on the other.”

“It was raw.”

“I believe the term is ‘over-easy’…”

“No, the term is ‘nasty’ and to think I kissed you last night.”

“Oh, ho! Well, you are in for a shock…”

“Why?”

“You’re gonna kiss me this morning, too!” he retorted and immediately darted for her. Elana jumped, setting down the skillet, and ran from him as he began chasing her like they were children, and she loved it.

“Brush your teeth!” she hollered, dodging his hand.

“Mmmmmm… liquid-chicky-nuggets…”

“Max!”

And he caught her, both of them laughing breathlessly as they stood in the hallway. He pressed her back to the wall and smiled tenderly at her, his soulful eyes watching her.
