Just looking at you,

I think I’ve finally got a clue,

And with you?

All my dreams come true.

“Oh, Max…” she breathed, stunned to her core.

“Can you hit the button to stop the song? I think I’m completely ‘rhymed out’ unless I sing Sir Mix-A-Lot. I know that song by heart,” he smiled sheepishly. “Cause I do like big butts.”

“Please don’t,” she chuckled nervously, tiptoeing through the debris on the floor to press pause before looking at him.

“Come here,” he invited – and she did. She perched gingerly on the side of the bed and looked at him.

“I never wanted to make you feel pressured or be the reason you cry,” he said openly. “I wanted us to talk, but I couldn’t stop thinking about our kiss when we got married.”

“I know…”

“And when you kissed me again, I’m not going to lie to you – I was hoping with everything I am that you might have changed your mind. I love holding you close, but if it makes you feel antsy or it’s not time, then I’m perfectly okay with waiting.”

She nodded tearfully, not looking away.

“I want our fairy tale,” he whispered. “And if I need to be cuffed and my pants locked up tighter than Fort Knox… I’m in,” he smiled tenderly. “Just hold me close and talk to me. You can cuddle with me, so I still get the benefit of breathing in your perfume or feeling you against me, wife.”

There was genuine worry in his gaze, almost as if he was checking to see if she was still interested in being married to him – and saw his eyes drop to her hand.

“Do you like your wedding ring?”

“I love it,” she whispered. “I don’t want to ever take it off.”

“Good,” he began hoarsely. “You shouldn’t. I wanted to get the biggest, heaviest ring, so I’m like a weight on your finger while I’m gone. Gotta make sure you never forget me and keep other guys away, you know.”

“I don’t think I will ever forget any of this,” she chuckled tearfully.

“I can be pretty unforgettable if you give me a chance,” he breathed, his voice laced with emotion as his eyes held hers. “I’m sorry that I disappointed you… w-will you cuddle beside me and hold me while we talk?”

“I’d like that,” she smiled and nervously lay down beside him, trying to adjust herself tentatively against his side, hesitating. “Don’t your shoulders hurt? I imagine laying on your back like this with your arms above your head isn’t exactly comfortable.”

“Honestly, my shoulders are fine… but I’ve got one link under my tailbone that’s not feeling so great.”

She couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled up as she looked up from where she’d put her cheek against his shoulder, meeting his eyes. His dark eyes held hers, and she saw the raw honesty in his gaze mingled with worry. He was willing to be uncomfortable for hours… for her.

This was crazy.

“You know,” she began nervously. “Maybe I need to learn a little more about marriage and being a wife too.”

“What do you mean?”

“If we are going to try tackling a life together, there should be trust,” she whispered, her eyes searching his. “I would rather you be comfortable when we cuddle and talk than to have you hurting.”

“I think this is best because I want to prove to you that I’m gonna keep my word…”

“Then do so – without all of this,” she countered. “If kissing is too much, then we just won’t kiss.”

“Now, wait a second,” he chuckled warily, looking at her in alarm. “I’m perfectly fine if that’s the penalty because I was sincerely hoping you’d feel safe enough to do some serious lip-locking.”

Gosh, he made her laugh, she thought, chuckling and wiping a tear of amusement from her face.
