“He is?”

“Yes – he’s a grown man that has to live his own life. You aren’t his father…”

“Yeah,” Max said childishly – only to see his sister-in-law glare at him.

“And you do not have to be the town bicycle where everyone gets a turn and with tramp stamps all over your body! You’ll end up getting something that cannot be cured and then what?”

“Ouch… does she talk to you like that?”

“Yep.”

“Dang…” Max muttered, smirking at Eileen, who rolled her eyes. “Trust me, sis – I’m not going to do something stupid while I’m in town. I want to have a little fun, maybe try to meet someone for a fun night or two, and then I’ll be heading back to Afghanistan. If it makes you feel any better, I’ll get my junk checked out by the clinic when I get home.”

“I don’t care about your junk,” she muttered, shaking her head hopelessly as both she and Reese shared a bemused look before laughing. “I cannot believe your brother.”

“He’s different.”

“I prefer the term ‘original’ or ‘unique’…”

“’Manwhore’ works…”

“Shut your filthy mouth,” Max exclaimed, looking at his brother in mock affront and slightly surprised. “I have feelings, you know – and I had no idea you knew that word. Tut-tut, where have you been slumming, Saint Reese?”

“Look, Max, just be careful… okay?”

“I always am,” he chuckled. “Trust me, I look before I touch.”

“Oh mercy…” Eileen said, slapping her forehead.

“If it’s red – we don’t get in the bed…” Max began dutifully, fighting back a smile as his brother’s eyes widened in shock.

“MAX!”

“What?!” he retorted, trying not to laugh, knowing he was getting under his brother’s skin. “Man, those are words to live by, bro! And ‘If it’s pink…”

“SHUT UP!” they yelled in unison, turning and looking over their shoulders in disbelief and horror – and Max burst out laughing wildly.

“Oh man, your faces… that’s so funny! Gosh, it’s good to be home.”

“Is he joking? I hope he’s joking…”

“I don’t honestly know anymore, Eileen…”

“I’m teasing – I promise.”

“You know, my friend is a paramedic too. If you need to get checked…”

“Is she single?”

“Never mind,” Eileen said flatly – and Max laughed once more.

“I’m only teasing you. I promise.”

“Let’s go inside and get you fed.”

“I am hungry.”

“It will keep you from speaking.”
