“Oh my gosh…” she blurted out, interrupting him – but he wasn’t about to let her get a word in edgewise because he kept talking.

“Secondly, those gorgeous fingernails of yours remind me of little claws…”

“I’m sorry I asked…”

“And last of all – this whole game of cat and mouse between us is exhilarating. The more you toy with me, the faster I want to run around you just to get your attention.”

“How come I feel like a mouse right now because you are toying with me…”

“Kitten, you are definitely in control. I am gonna be so helpless when you decide to finally pounce and make me yours,” he whispered intimately across the table. “I cannot wait for the day…”

“For what?”

“That you decide to quit playing around and finally take a taste. I have a suspicion that a certain feline likes toying with her food.”

They stared at each other, and Elana paused, her glass frozen halfway to her mouth to take a sip. Neither said another word as his implication was clear… only to hear a throat cleared nearby.

“I can come back if you need a few more minutes to place your order,” the waiter began and sounded a little out of sorts at having been privy to such blatant teasing between them.

“Not necessary,” Elana said softly. “I’ll have the filet and a baked potato…”

“I’ll have the porterhouse – and the same,” Max said, and he didn’t look away, bothered, or even remotely shameless, as he continued. “Do you have cheesecake on the dessert menu? We’ll take that too. Do you want it to go, kitten?”

“I don’t know that I want cheesecake.”

“Perhaps with a cup of coffee later?”

“I’m not making you coffee,” she sputtered – and his smile widened.

“I’m sure they have coffee here,” Max murmured as his eyes drifted downwards slightly before coming back up to her face. “We’ll take the cheesecake to go.”

“Skip the cheesecake,” she said hoarsely.

“To go,” he repeated firmly.

“I’ll go place your dinner orders and let you two decide what you want,” the waiter said, backing away from the table – and Elana pounced.

“I’m not sleeping with you,” she said bluntly. “I barely know you, and all you’ve done is allude to wanting to get into my pants.”

“Good thing you’re wearing a skirt… and a fine-looking one at that.”

“In case it hasn’t hit you yet,” she began again. “I’m not looking to date someone who isn’t sincere or…”

“Oh, I’m very sincere,” Max interrupted. “I couldn’t be sincere-er…” and made a weird face. “Is that a word?”

“No.” And she let out an unexpected chuckle before sighing and looking at him. “You didn’t hear a word I said about getting to know me – did you?”

“I hear everything you say to me,” Max replied, leaning on his fist and smiling at her. “What’s your favorite color?”

“Blue – and you?”

“Whatever shade of lipstick that is…” he sighed openly, winking at her. “Seriously, what shade is that? Because I’m going to order you enough to last until you are eighty, woman. I love that soft rose color and can’t wait to have it smeared on me.”

“Can you lighten up? You are coming on strong… very, very strong.”

“I’m sorry. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen something that knocked the wind out of me… and even longer since I’ve wanted to get to know someone.”

“Oh? See, now we are talking. When was the last time you dated someone you wanted to get to know better?” she asked, grasping at straws and hoping to steer the conversation.
