“Oooh, sobriety is sounding a lot more fun!”

Jeremy puts an arm around my shoulders. “Come on. Let’s go join the crowd.”

And then we’re outside again. The long table has been filled out now with the addition of the guys and there are cheers and greetings as we walk back.

I catch Nikko’s eye and mouth thank you. He winks.

“Hey, you found each other!” Joyce lifts her glass. “Welcome, Chief!”

Jeremy pulls a chair out for me, and I sit, flattered by his attentiveness. I have a vague idea that I was thinking about something important just before he showed up, but before I can pursue that thought, Jeremy is clinking his glass to mine.

“To having a great time with friends,” he says, but the look in his eye makes me think he’s not just thinking about friends.

“To having a great time,” I agree and drink my wine.

JEREMY

When I wake up, Blaze’s soft curvy ass is snuggled up right against my dick, which is hard as a rock. I’ve got one arm around her, pulling her close, her silky hair is getting caught rather delightfully in my beard.

I slide one hand down her soft, bare arm and think about waking her up with some well-placed kisses. She’d be the perfect breakfast. Then I glance at the clock and sigh. It’s Monday morning, we both need to go to work, and I need to let Jackie out, too.

But damn, I hate to think of leaving her. We went home together after the party on Saturday and spent all day yesterday and all night last night together. We went for a short hike yesterday afternoon, picked up pizza for dinner on the way home, and in the evening, she made me watch a rom-com movie—in revenge for the hike, she said, but I actually enjoyed it.

All of it was so ordinary… and so fun. It feels so natural being with her, like we’ve known each other all our lives. And at the same time, the sparks between us feel brand new. We haven’t talked about labeling our relationship or where we might be going with it, but she seems to be enjoying it just as much as I am. I think we’re on the same page, more or less. Maybe once things with the Addison have been decided, we can put politics behind us and focus on the future.

For now, I wish I could spend all morning in bed with her, but duty calls.

Trying not to disturb her, I get out of bed as quietly as I can. She rolls over and blinks sleepily at me anyway. “What time is it?” she murmurs.

“Time for me to take Jackie out and get ready for work.”

She half sits up to look at the bedside table clock then flops back down. “Ugh, Mondays are the worst!”

I grin lazily at her, taking in her bare shoulders and the curve of breast that peeps out from beneath the covers. “Not from where I’m sitting.”

She brushes her hair out of her face. “You are good for a girl’s ego, I’ll give you that.”

“Hey, what say I go get dressed and then I’ll walk you to work?” I suggest.

She gives me a sweet, almost shy smile. “Thanks. That would be nice.”

Forty-five minutes later, we meet on the front porch and head into town. I’d like to hold her hand, but I’m mindful of her wish to not broadcast our involvement until after things have been settled with the Addison.

“I’m going to stop in for a support latte,” she says as we approach the Flying Saucer. “Join me?”

“Nothing I’d like more.”

We place our orders with a barista whose name tag reads Mariah. I get my Americano, and Blaze gets her support latte and a couple of drinks for her co-workers.

“I’ll be paying of course,” I tell Mariah before Blaze can get her wallet out.

“It’s already been paid for,” the barista responds.

I look at Blaze, who grins in triumph. “Psych! I called ahead. Told you I’d get the next drink.”

“You sneaky devil.” I can’t keep the admiration out of my voice. “You know this means war.”
