“Beaver-dammed?”

“The lady version of cock-blocked.”

He throws back his head with a laugh, then smiles at me. “I don’t think you’re obnoxious, Blaze.”

“Not even the first time I met you?”

“Okay, I thought you were obnoxious then,” he admits. “I couldn’t believe how ballsy you were, but now it’s actually my favorite thing about you. You’re definitely not the beat-around-the-bush type.”

I smirk. “Oh, trust me, you can beat around my bush any day.”

He snorts again with laughter. “Cute. Seriously, though… after Christine, I wasn’t planning on getting involved with anyone for a while. But I like you, Blaze. And I’m very attracted to you.”

I’m seized with something that feels a little like panic. Or maybe it’s hope? Or maybe it’s something else. Whatever it is, it closes my throat up and erases coherent thought.

I should tell him that I’m not the serious relationship type. I should tell him that I’ve applied to a dozen out-of-state jobs. I should tell him that jocks like him don’t go for girls like me except maybe once in a one-night-stand blue moon.

The Chief is looking at me. Shit, I guess he expects some kind of reply.

I clear my throat. “I guess I wasn’t expecting that.”

“Hey, if you don’t feel the same way, I understand—”

He starts to stand up, but I grab his wrist with a speed and strength I didn’t know I was capable of. “Maybe we could just make out for a little while longer?”

He sits down beside me again, even closer this time.

“We can keep it light and just … see how things go?” Because suddenly I’m thinking it might be nice to see where things go and not just settle for something quick and dirty.

Though quick and dirty wouldn’t be anything to complain about.

“Yeah… just see how things go. I’d like that.” The Chief strokes my face with one calloused hand. “Why do I get the feeling I’m playing with fire?”

“You of all people shouldn’t have a problem with that,” I point out.

“You sure about this?”

In response, I throw one leg over his lap and pull myself up so that I’m straddling him. “Very sure.”

I take his face in my hands and lean down for a scorching kiss. His arms tighten around my waist and pull me closer. I spread my knees a little further apart so I can press myself against the very promising bulge in his jeans.

He lifts me and twists and suddenly, I’m flat on my back on the couch, the Chief’s large body pressing against me. I wrap my legs around his waist and pull him toward me.

“Damn, woman,” he breathes and the ravishing begins in earnest.

My lips find their way to Jeremy’s neck, his earlobe, and his collarbone as my hands grope at his t-shirt, sliding beneath it to feel the warm skin and the hard muscles underneath.

Jeremy holds his own. The man knows how to kiss and he doesn’t limit himself. He kisses my mouth and down my throat, nips my shoulder, and moves back up to my mouth as he tugs on the hem of my tank top. First his hands, then his lips find my breasts and I think I might actually pass out from pleasure when his mouth closes over one nipple, sucking gently as his beard brushes against my skin.

“You want to go upstairs?” I suggest. “There’s a lot more room on the bed.”

He pulls away and oh, the dark, wild look in his eyes, like he’s just barely holding on to his control. I’m doing this to him, I think to myself. He wants me.

His voice is hoarse. “Let’s go.”

We scramble off the couch, and I practically run upstairs, Jeremy hot on my heels, and together we tumble into my unmade queen-size bed. I’ve already lost my robe, and Jeremy wastes no time removing my tank top.

He swears under his breath as he gazes at my breasts. “I have wanted to get a good look at these since the day you came storming into my fire station making demands.”
