My response got him to chuckle and shake his head.

It was… weird.

The day I killed his mother was burned into my memory. The way his face displayed confusion that soon morphed into shock. His body trembled with anger, eyes as dark as night. He’d become unrecognizable, as if he’d turned into a different person.

And yet, for months, I managed to roam free.

The men he sent to watch over me weren’t the way I thought he’d work. Even after cooperating with my brothers to track down my father, I thought that once we met, it would be a battle till one of us died.

Why was all of his anger locked away?

It terrified me. No matter how much I knew about him, there was no telling what was going on in his head. The entire situation was fucked up. His calm demeanor and the sinister look in his eyes made me uneasy.

My obsession knew no limits. This man was mine, whether he liked it or not. Yet, it was his obsession that made no sense. Did killing his mother have only an immediate effect that later on vanished? Because if that wasn’t true, he was waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Footsteps broke my train of thought. I straightened my posture, and my back cracked a little. Instead of waiting for those people to attack, I aimed the rifle and began shooting. The clip was emptied before most of them fell, and Davorin covered for me whilst I replaced it.

Then, a loud laugh came from me.

The smell of death liberated me. The fear in their eyes as I was the last thing they ever saw—something about that made my stomach twist and turn in all the best ways. It wasn’t like I killed innocent people who simply annoyed me. Not that often, at least.

This was a game of survival, and little pests like them could never be the predators. It was me who they’d underestimated, and it had resulted in their inevitable death. For years, people continued to underestimate me. It was getting old, and proving all of them wrong was tiring.

One day, all of them would see who was at the top of the food chain. They would bow down to me and be at my mercy, even if it was the last thing I did.

“You were supposed to leave another person alive, little lion.”

“Oh.” A sigh of disappointment followed. “Is this it? Where’s the other man?”

“He’s hiding. I’m assuming he was their last resort in case they failed.”

My shoulders slumped. “What now? Do we just… wait?”

“You are going to get in the car and fucking leave. I’ll deal with him.”

His condescending tone made my eyebrow twitch in irritation. I tilted my head to the side, eyes widened. There was not a single scenario where Adrik could kick me off the property willingly. The other option was killing me.

“No.” My decision was firm. “I won’t get in your way, but I won’t be running away like a child. You can’t make me.”

His voice lowered. “You’re acting like one right now.”

“What if he’s high up in some tree and just waiting for me to walk towards the car? I’d be dead before I could see it coming.”

Adrik closed his eyes for a brief moment. He was trying his best not to get angry, but it was beyond his control. The calm, stoic demeanor slowly began to slip, and his eyes held that dangerous look within—the look that made me fall for him.

“Fine, just make sure you’re close to me.”

I grinned and gave him a thumbs up.

I walked behind him. Slowly, we made our way deeper into the forest. My eyes were always above, glancing and trying to figure out where the hell he went. If he was waiting for us inside the house, this was a waste of time, but we couldn’t leave until every inch of the property had been searched.

“I’m assuming you like Felix.”

The statement threw me off guard, I hadn’t expected to hear about my puppy from him.

“Yeah, he’s cute.”

Davorin paused. Slowly, he turned around. Darkness surrounded us, and a mere glance his way made me realize that he was the most dangerous person in the woods. That little assassin would meet his maker soon, though, given the way I was being looked at, so would I.
