It was as if he was distancing himself mentally from me by using the nickname he knew I hated. What a rotten bastard. The smile dropped from my face entirely, and that was all the invitation he needed to get closer to me until the barrel of my gun rested on his forehead.

“You and I both know you won’t pull the trigger, little lion.” Flames burst inside of me, an unknown feeling of warmth filling me. It was all because of that nickname.

As if it had a mind of its own, my body moved closer to him. I stared up at him, his hot breath tickling my face, yet I never removed the gun from his forehead.

“And why not?” I asked, breathless all of a sudden. “It would make my life a lot easier with you out of the picture.”

“Because, little lion.” He paused briefly, provoking me. “You want me by your side. You need me. You can deny it all you want, but that desire for me in your eyes, that hunger that only I can satisfy, will forever hold you back.” His words were nothing but a whisper.

I opened my mouth to respond, then closed them, eyes narrowed.

I heard at least three different cars pull up, the doors opening immediately. It was a noise loud enough to send a message: they were here and wanted me to know. A small hiss slipped through my lips as I removed the gun.

“Your friends?” I spoke through gritted teeth, clenching my fists at my sides. The meeting I’d patiently waited months for was about to get cut short, and anger that was kept locked away threatened to resurface.

“Just some pests that I’ll take care of.”

My eyes closed. I couldn’t tell exactly how many people were out there, but it was more than enough. Tonight was going to be a difficult night. It wasn’t going to be easy to get rid of them, given their number. The awful gut feeling returned in its fullness; this was what I’d been waiting for.

“Damn it,” I cussed. “Why now?”

Davorin followed me as I quickly opened the rest of the cabinets, revealing more weapons than any sane person had seen in their lifetime.

He was standing less than an inch behind me, his scent filling all of my senses. Goosebumps appeared on my skin, and my eyes closed of their own accord. It was proof of how much I was unable to control myself around him. We were about to be shot at, yet all I could think about was turning around and jumping his bones.

“Don’t worry, my sweet Kaya,” he mumbled. I turned around only after he took a step back. “We’re about to have a lot of fun.”

Slowly, he took a strand of my hair and twirled it around his finger before placing a kiss on it. Although I didn’t feel his soft lips on me, a small whimper slipped out. As if something had burst inside of me, my insides were on fire. No one touched fire and remained unharmed. It was all I could think about, yet I couldn’t bring myself to care.

If touching Davorin’s fire meant being burnt for life, I was ready to ignite. I’d wear the scars as armor.

Then, as I took a gun in my hand, all hell broke loose.

SEVEN

EKATERINA

My instincts kicked in as soon as the first bullet went through the windows. I ducked, preparing my weapons as quickly as possible. Davorin followed suit, bending down, eyes locked on the front side of the house.

“Why the fuck did you lead them here?”

Davorin shushed me with his finger, annoying me further. The night that was supposed to be perfect was ruined by uninvited guests who wanted nothing but to kill me. It fueled my anger that it was him who’d brought them here.

“Consider it a gift.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You’re going to enjoy killing them, and I’ll help you. And we’ll leave one or two of them alive, so we can actually track where they go.”

“There was a much easier way of doing that,” I mumbled under my breath. “Though I’m not opposed to having some fun. We don’t have enough time before they figure out there are two back exits from the house.”

He didn’t respond, and that irritated me further. “You know, next time, ask if I want a gift or not,” I mocked, though he was able to feel the sheer annoyance. “I had other things in mind, not… Well, this.”

I could feel him smirk as I turned around. “There will be plenty of time for you to do everything that you had in mind.”

I whispered, hearing just how closely the people had gotten to us. “Not if we both die here.”

“Relax. We won’t die.”
