FIVE

DAVORIN

This room was getting more and more depressing each time I visited. Xenia was the only one absent this time. However, Ilya was there in her stead. Although we didn’t see eye to eye in a lot of situations, we were civil. He operated well and was useful. Having him around was a benefit.

“Do you understand your role tonight, Davorin?” Aleksei’s sharp voice rang throughout the room. All eyes were on me, as if they’d expected I’d suddenly back out or throw a tantrum. With an eye roll, I laughed.

“Of course. Don’t kill him but gather any possible information.”

The auction was in a few hours. Masks were expected to be worn by everyone attending, and I had mine. It would be recognized, undeniably, but it was part of the fun. If I couldn’t kill tonight, I had to entertain myself otherwise.

Ilya was pissed that he had to tag along yet had to remain in the shadows. “Why can’t we just kill him? It’s two against one. He’s a threat we are leaving for later. Who knows how much trouble he’ll cause?”

“Ekaterina is certain that he will not work with Bogdan, and that’s good enough for me.”

Dominik’s expression didn’t allow even his most trusted man, Ilya, to counter. He was putting an immense amount of trust into Kaya’s words without any solid proof to back them up. Ilya thought so, as well, yet was unable to counter his boss. With a sigh of defeat, he sat down and seemed oddly disinterested in the rest of the conversation.

“Then we can finish up here. Davorin and Ilya, go to the basement and pick weapons of your choice. Report back to me as soon as the auction is done.”

With a nod, I was out of his office.

I decided against getting a weapon from him. All of mine were custom made, and that was how I preferred it. I had more than enough resources to complete a simple task such as this one. And besides, if things turned ugly tonight, I wanted to leave my marks, not the ones of the Bratva.

My phone had been buzzing for the past hour, which was about how long the meeting lasted. It was Felix; only he and Ekaterina had this specific phone number, and she wouldn’t call even if her life depended on it or she got arrested again.

Once I was inside of my car, driving off Aleksei’s property, I called him.

“What is it?”

“Can you hurry up and get here quicker?” Desperation was in his voice, then he sneezed, loudly. I could practically picture his tortured expression, the begging in his eyes. Knowing Kaya, she was having fun playing around with him as if he were a Barbie doll.

“What did she do?”

He sighed. “I’ve been cleaning this house the entire day, and she’s outside playing garden.”

“What?”

“Let me quickly summarize the events that took place in the past twenty-four hours. I took her home, and she put sleeping pills in my tea. When I woke up, she forced me to clean whilst she’s outside in the woods, doing god knows what.”

I clenched my jaw, irritated at the thought. “She gave you the slip? On the first day? Why am I even paying you?”

“To be fair, who would’ve thought she’d put me to sleep?”

It was laughable. Since it was Ekaterina, I wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d killed him on the first day. The fact that she knew I sent him and still kept him around meant that she’d taken a liking to that boy, and it pissed me off.

He had a baby face, a thin figure, and wasn’t interested in her romantically. Why the fuck was it bothering me so much?

“Take a look outside. Check what she’s doing.”

I could’ve sworn he cussed at me, though he didn’t dare to repeat it loud enough for me to hear it. A minute of silence passed, then he opened his mouth.

“She’s hiding her guns, apparently.”

A wide grin spread on my face.

Ekaterina was either a psychic, or her intelligence was truly beyond my understanding. To make sure to have an open way out would be the easier solution, but she went out of her way to plant guns around the woods, as if she was expecting trouble to come her way.

It wasn’t surprising. She almost always invited trouble.
