I knocked him out with the back of the gun. He fell on the floor with a thud, and I immediately wrote down everything he’d told me, just in case Dominik decided to go in my stead.

Uncertainty filled me. It was too easy to be true. Either The Rapscallion was a freak who got off on being hidden in plain sight, or the man wasn’t The Rapscallion himself. There was not a doubt in my mind that the auction house would be a bloodbath, and I was prepared.

Anything to get rid of the people who were after my woman.

Because if anyone was getting rid of Ekaterina, it was me. In my own way, when I decided it was time.

FOUR

EKATERINA

Getting arrested wasn’t on this year’s agenda. In fact, it wasn’t in my plans at all.

And unlike the time Rhea and I got arrested, this one wasn’t fun, nor would I be able to get out so easily. Aleksei was in New York, and, even if his connections reached this place, Bogdan would be aware of my record before it was permanently hidden. Hence, there was no point.

Sitting in the damn jail cell felt like eternity. No one spoke to me. They saw me as a lowlife. Truthfully, I didn’t have any intention of selling the drug. I wanted to get high as fuck because what was going to happen within a few days’ time stressed me out. It wasn’t my first time smoking marijuana, but it had been a while, which was why I bought more than necessary.

Evidently, that didn’t happen. I wasn’t high when I sped through a red light, but I was slightly intoxicated. I was so deep into my own brain that I simply missed the signs, and the cops were behind me already.

Of course, my brothers were going to pull me out of this mess. For a tiny moment, I did wonder if they would leave me to rot in prison for a few years until the Bogdan ordeal had been dealt with. But those thoughts were quickly brushed aside. They weren’t bold enough to put me in a place with so many people to kill.

The only person who I thought of calling was Davorin. Why did I do that? A part of me truly wanted to taunt him, to force him to come quicker. Yet the other part of me simply wanted to hear his voice and the rage that he wouldn’t be able to mask.

The disappointment mixed with rage when I saw an unknown boy come to pick me up was indescribable. He was barely twenty years old. His arms were skinnier than mine, and I was positive I would’ve been able to snap his neck like a twig without using even twenty percent of my strength.

To make him as uncomfortable as possible, I simply stared at him coldly. His demeanor continued to falter the longer we were in the car, surrounded by complete and utter silence. The boy’s name was Felix, and it seemed that he worked for Davorin, since my brothers rarely allowed an outsider to do work for them.

He flinched when I cleared my throat, and the situation was amusing. “So, how long are you going to babysit me?”

His shoulders were rigid. Felix stared straight ahead, trying to hide how his hands were shaking from time to time. Even his bottom lips trembled slightly as he tried to think of an appropriate answer. Oddly enough, I caught that but couldn’t see a whole damn red light.

“I’m not babysitting, Miss.” He swallowed. “I simply came to get you out and assist you in any way for the foreseeable future.”

What an answer.

Why not tease him more?

“That’s great! Then let’s head home, and I’ll grab my guns. There are a lot of people who got on my nerves recently, and I simply can’t take all of them out by myself.”

Abruptly, he pressed the brake, and I almost flew through the windshield. For a moment, I contemplated killing him with my bare hands, but the moment my eyes landed on his shocked, disturbed, and terrified face, I forgot the anger. It was too funny.

“I’m so sorry, Miss,” he stuttered. It was cute how he was calling me ‘Miss,’ like a child who was afraid of his mother. “But I’ve never killed a person, and I wouldn’t be of much help.”

I tilted my head to the side. “You haven’t? Then what is it that you do for Adrik?”

Felix was nervous, shivering despite it being mid-summer in Houston. It took him a minute before he started the car again and drove off. My intense gaze was on him, challenging him. I was curious just how long he would be able to keep his mouth shut.

“I’m mainly sitting behind a computer and getting information for him.”

“So, you’re a hacker?”

“Yes, Miss.”

“Are you any good?”

I saw a faint smile, though it vanished quicker than it came. “I’d say I’m one of the best ones out there currently.”

“That’s arrogant.”
