‘Thank you, baby Jesus!’ Thorn exclaimed and rocked the boat.

“Will you calm down,” I chastised him as I pushed our log closer to the dock. Cicada shells lined the edge as I reached out to pull us closer. Eww.

‘You might be fine stewing in your own filth, but this is disgusting even for me,’ Thorn whined.

He had a point. I’d had days where I’d gotten sweaty, dirty, downright disgusting, but this took the prize.

“Do you think Jules will be easy to find?” Kaye asked as she awkwardly climbed onto the deck.

“Hopefully. I don’t want to stay around here that long.”

As if speaking his name conjured him, the whirling of his wheelchair was heard as he exited the motel. Tiny lights shone along his wheelchair, lighting his way as he came out to greet us. That’s pretty nifty.

“Here are your lamps,” Kaye said in greeting as I tied up his precious heirloom.

I turned to find Jules staring at me with his milky eyes. A chill ran down my spine. He pushed his wheelchair closer to me, and I swallowed hard, forcing myself not to move as he peered up at me.

‘Rave… Junior’s shirt,’ Thorn warned me.

Shit! I still had the bastard’s shirt pressed against my wound, which I really needed to get looked at.

It was one thing to fix up Thorn’s sprained leg, but I wasn’t about to triage my stab wound out in the damn boonies when we could do it back in civilization.

“Um. I can explain,” I started, and then Jules surprised me by asking his own question.

“Julia gone?”

“Yes, sir, and your son is gator bait.”

“Rave!” Kaye chastised me.

“What?” I shrugged and looked at her. “He needs to know,” I said, indicating Jules.

He sucked on his teeth for a moment and gave me a small nod. “No good ‘oung’n,” he said before pulling out some money. “It all there.”

“Sir, you keep it. I know it won't bring back your son, but hopefully, you can use it for other things,” Kaye insisted, taking his hand and folding it back over the money.

He nodded slightly before turning and disappearing back into the darkness, his small lights leading him to his home.

‘I don’t know about you, but I’m not going back through the haunted mansion,’ Thorn stated before leading the way around the building.

If I had my way, I would never come back to the damn state. One trip was enough for me.

CHAPTER 13

Voodoo Magic

Ravena

‘Ican’t believe we’re doing this,’ I murmured to Thorn as I yanked my boot out of the mud and leaned against an old cypress tree to put it back on. I whipped my long brunette hair over my shoulder in the hope of relieving the heat off my neck, but it turned out it was pointless in a swamp. I knew wearing all black was a bad idea.

‘What, getting a free mud bath?’ He chuckled at my predicament and climbed up the tree I was leaning on.

‘I see your leg is feeling better,’ I noticed.

‘Yep, it’s amazing what pain meds and pampering will do for you. I’m telling you. Kaye is a godsend,’ Thorn raved.

‘If I ever find a Genie, I’m asking for Kaye to be able to hear your ass. And then we can see how she treats you.’ I chuckled as I took in his position in the tree. At least he could get to higher ground so I wouldn’t be tempted to smack him with my boot.
