My staff had no problem holding against the jaws of life and death, but the pain in my shoulder and my adrenaline weren’t going to last forever.

‘Did you find her bag?’ I asked, shifting my weight as the gator tried to get at me once again.

‘Yeah.’

‘Then have her shoot the fucking lizard! Lead her over here.’

Thorn started to howl, and I was sure he’d guide Kaye closer, so I had to trust she knew where to shoot this damn thing. She was the smarty pants in this relationship. I knew they went over this shit in class, but I wasn’t the type to really pay attention; that’s why I had Kaye.

“Shoot it!” I yelled.

A gunshot rang out, and I screamed as the gator charged me. My grip faltered and slipped just when his eyes rolled up, and he collapsed. Dead.

“Holy Shit!” I whispered.

“Rave! Are you okay?” Kaye asked, running over to me and helping me up. Fighting off the gator had exhausted me, and all I wanted to do was sleep, but our mission wasn’t done.

“Yeah,” I said with some effort. “It was a piece of cake.” I smiled and retracted my bracelet.

I caught Julia Brown in my peripheral, and my heart plummeted. She had stopped chanting and trying to bring forth a hurricane and instead had conjured a spell. And it was coming right at Kaye’s back. Without thinking, I shoved Kaye out of the way, and the force of the spell sent me sliding across the yard.

‘Rave!’ Thorn cried.

Besides having the breath knocked out of me, I was fine, physically—just sore. If anything, the bitch was just pissing me off.

“Are you okay?” Kaye asked, giving me a once-over.

I nodded and focused back on Julia as I unwound my bracelet once again.

“Julia Brown. You are hereby charged with evading Purgatory’s call, and we are here to return you,” Kaye said as we approached.

Julia started to laugh and turned to face us fully, her arms glowing slightly with a sickly green tint. Probably loading up on more spells. If she was going to hit us with spells, that meant her barrier was finally down.

“Sorry, little Reapers, but that won’t be happening. Guess you should have had a plan B.” She cackled and pulled back her arm.

A crack splintered the night as I flicked my wrist, and Julia’s head rolled from her shoulders.

“How’s that for plan B?” I asked as I sat down and watched her body topple over while her magic disappeared from her body.

CHAPTER 12

Oopsies, Our Bad

Ravena

“What happened to us always completing the job, Rave?” Kaye growled at me.

“It’s not like she could have stood trial like that,” I pointed out.

“True, but don’t you think this is overkill?” Kaye asked me as she rolled her eyes at my antics.

I paused as I looked down at the last of the bitch’s clothes and the small bones she had around her neck before throwing those into the bonfire as well.

“Nope,” I said as I wiped my palms along my jeans. “Think of it as a cleansing of the area.” I smiled in her direction before picking up the lighter fluid and proceeding to Julia Brown's shack.

The darkness had receded without the witch and her magic, and the storm clouds were no longer looming. I’m sure if I was listening to the weather report, they would be marking it up to some supernatural voodoo or miracle shit. If they only knew how on the nose they would be.

Standing in front of the small window of the shack, I opened the lighter fluid container and smiled as I doused it with liquid.
