“How much do you want to bet he’s gonna take all your glory?” Lynx whispers to me.

“Our usual?” I can’t help but fire back, hoping he will miraculously remember.

“What was our usual?” Lynx asks as Ryker calls out to the group.

“Normally you would ask for a belly rub in your cat form,” I explained. “So, let’s make it a backrub. Loser gives it.”

“Deal.” Lynx gives me a cocky smile and crosses his arms before we give Ryker our attention.

“Hey!” Ryker yells out. “There’s a ripple by the spike. Rez caught it. Someone tampered with the body.”

When Lynx’s head falls back on his shoulder and his arms fall down by his side, I can’t help but gloat. I throw him a cocky look as I run my tongue over my upper teeth and brush the dirt off my shoulders. He throws me a glare before shaking his head.

‘You better not act like a sore loser. Do you know how many times I’ve lost to you?’

‘No, I wish I did. I bet those belly rubs were purrrfect.’ He waggles his eyebrows, and I giggle, bumping into his shoulder.

Even though it’s sad that he doesn’t remember, at least he keeps it light, and that’s one of the many reasons why I love him.

“Rez!” Ryker’s voice calls out

I look up and find L.A.M.B., Lilith, and Ryker looking at me. Oh shit!

“Sorry. What?” I ask, giving the room a slight smile.

“I can’t see it from here. Do you think you can show her?” Ryker hesitates slightly, pointing to the body.

Taking in a deep breath, I nod and hurry down the stairs. The last thing I want to do is get on Lilith’s bad side when she’s this close to… doing whatever Bez implied the other day.

“Sure,” I say, squeezing between Lilith and Bez. I reach out next to the spike to point at the edge, but as I get closer, a film-like substance seems to lift slightly. Following my instincts—or more my curiosity—I glide my hand away from the spike and closer to the film. My mouth drops in awe as the layer ripples like water over rocks as it slowly draws away from my hands and I guide it away from myself. A few gasps and murmurs ring out around the room as I continue to move up the body, but it’s not until I get to the face that all hell breaks loose, or more specifically, Lilith.

“NO!” Lilith roars! She reaches the body just as I uncover it, which doesn’t look at all like the blond-haired man they had brought in. Instead, this is clearly a female demon with small onyx horns and a heart-shaped tail. Lilith throws her arm out with a growl, and the body rips free of the spike with the force she uses and flies across the room, slamming into the wall.

She raises her other hand, causing a candle to fly across the room and slam into the floor, where it twirls in an invisible whirlwind. After a few more candles join the terrifying dance, I notice the rattling in the room. Weapons that are lined along the walls start lifting before slamming back against the wall as if a magnet is switching off and on, and in the middle of it all is Lilith, screaming and cursing Adam’s name.

Shit!

A blur of blue moves in front of me, and something grabs me around my waist before I’m airborne for a brief second. The room stops moving, and I’m back on the ledge with Murmur and Ryker.

“We need to get you all out of here before you get hurt!” he yells over Lilith’s screaming.

We turn to move away from the pit when a glint catches my eye. My heart flies into my throat, choking any air from escaping as an ax rips free from the wall, along with a few other weapons. The ax spirals toward me, and there’s no way I can move out of the way. I’m at the back of the group with Murmur, so all I can do is put up my hands and hope Lilith’s whirlwind will swing it off course.

Bang!

Cracking open my eyes, I have a déjà vu moment when I find my glittery force field up in front of me once again. Murmur turns toward me, looks down at the ax by my feet, and then back at my force field.

“How are you doing that?” he asks with a slack jaw and wide eyes. “I thought you were a novice.”

“I’m a Rez! And I have no clue,” I answer honestly with wide eyes.

“Well, that’s not good.” His nose wrinkles as he looks at my shaky hands. “Can you move with that?”

“I can try,” I admit. My shield is doing a decent job of blocking some of the debris Lilith is causing from entering our little pathway, but I can’t see if everyone is clear. From where I’m at, all I can see is the rest of L.A.M.B. dodging Lilith’s chaos as they try to get close enough to stop her.

Murmur backs up and gives me a nod. “Everyone is clear,” he calls to me, raising his voice to be heard over the noise.

I slowly take a step back, keeping my eye on my forcefield and as soon as I move my other foot, I feel it. Something inside of me that feels tight like a string is being pulled too far, and pop! My field drops just as another weapon heads my way. My lungs give a whoosh as something hits me in the stomach just as I get pulled back and out of the way.
