“No, why would I be jonesing?” Her head tilts to the side as a line forms between her eyebrows. “I don’t even know a Jones. I know coffee, though.”

“Ugh, I give up!” I throw up my hands. “And I’m not wearing panties, Murmur. They went up in flames along with your damn brain cells. Don’t you see the fucking issue here? We’re on a timetable. Knots' protective charm blew when he got his memories back, and King Elverson is as petty and vindictive as his spawn of Satan.” I look over at JP and Moni and grimace. “No offense, guys.”

“None taken,” they both say.

“We’re gonna miss class, which is the whole point of wearing these damn bracelets,” I say, waving my arm about. “I don’t even know why we’re still wearing them since they can’t even measure our progress while we’re down here,” I yell, and try to take off my bracelet. “Fuck! I can’t even take the damn thing off now. Is everything malfunctioning around here? Is there no other way home? Are you just gonna sit there and—and watch me like a bump on the log?”

“We are doing something,” Lucifer calmly states, and I see red. With a burst of anger, I fling my arms out with a frustrated scream and feel something shoot out of them, directed toward my friends. Suddenly, Bez throws multiple balls of Hellfire out in an arch, and before I can scream as the fireballs head my way, they start to hiss and pop, stopping mid-flight. As the fires die out, multiple pings sound as a few things hit the floor. Levi reaches down and picks up a long silver weapon. As he turns it, I notice it’s sharp and pointed on both ends, and it’s about four inches long. It looks like a deadly knitting needle on steroids.

He slowly touches the tip, jerking his hand back and hissing in pain where it cuts him. He flinches again when the item pulls from his grip, levitating for a moment. A movement catches my eye as all the other ones in the room rise and start spinning.

“Ahh. Does anyone else get the urge to run out of here screaming?” Moni asks as she grabs Chester’s hand and slowly gets up. Her bark turns pale white as the little death needles begin to shake.

In a blink of an eye, they zip across the room but in the wrong direction—mine! In the split second, I have to defeat the oncoming cross-stitch needles from Hell. I throw my hands up and summon all the powers of all my mighty crossing guards around the world. If they can’t make these damn things stop, then there’s no hope for me.

My palms spasm and twitch as the needles slide into my skin without pain. Once it ends and I realize I haven’t been un-alived, I pull myself up straight. With the steady hands of someone going through withdrawals, I turn them over to assess the damage. Nothing. There’s no blood, holes, scabs, blemishes, or anything. Am I seeing things?

“How did you do that?” Bez demands, standing up and approaching me.

Great, now the gentle mass murderer wants to get up close and personal. I bet it’s to stab me.

“I—I didn’t do anything,” I insist, backing up until I hit the bar.

“Yes, you did. I saw them fly from your palms. It was the Hellfire that made them visible,” his voice turns menacing.

Wait. He’s saying I did that? I made those things fly out of me? How is that even possible? I just do defensive shit.

“Hey,” Lynx says, getting up and heading over with Ryker and Knox on his tail.

“I swear, I don’t even know what they are,” I yell, shoving my palms out.

“Back off!” JP says, coming around the other way too… I don’t know what these guys plan on doing against Bez. I haven’t personally trained with him, and I think that fact is scary enough.

“Well, that’s our cue to train and find out,” Murmur says, as his tail wraps around my waist and he pulls me out of reach of everyone.

“What are you doing?” I yell, yet hold onto his tail for dear life.

“Saving yours and their lives. It’s not smart to get in between Bez and what he wants to understand,” he says as he flies us down the hall and into the training room, where he drops me on the first mat.

“Then what does that say about you? I mean really, Murmur? This is not the time to train. Did you hear anything I said in there?” I argue as I pull myself off the mat with a huff. I push my hair out of the way and glare up to see Murmur smirking at me.

“What?!”

“I heard everything, but I’m more concerned with what flew out of your hands, so let’s see how we can control that,” he says, placing his hands on his hips. “It looks like it’s time to get you angry.”

“Pfft. I’m like Bruce Banner—I’m already angry,” I growl.

“Well then. This training exercise shouldn’t last long.” He raises an eyebrow right as I feel his tail wrap around my ankle and pull a foot out from underneath me.

I land with an oomph, and the air whooshes out of me.

“Hmm. I might be wrong,” he says, rubbing his chin and leaning over my body. “You’re gonna take all night, aren’t you?”

“I hate you,” I mutter.

“Good. Use that anger.”

Grumbling, I roll over, pulling myself up to glare at Murmur.
