“Is—is that Fluffers howling?” Kitten asks, shaking me out of my mental conversation.

“You can hear him?” I ask, completely shocked.

“I hear howling. Is he okay?” she asks, searching my eyes.

‘Is this what you meant, you little starbrat?’ I hiss at Dusky, but all he does is laugh.

“Yeah, he’s okay. Just upset that he’s not your first mate, and he’s afraid you’re going to leave him.” I run my hands up and down her back as I walk us back to the bed.

I climb in, and she lays her head on my chest before shocking me once again. “I want to try something.” She closes her eyes, and it takes a moment, but I feel something tickling my brain before I stifle a laugh.

‘Check check check. Check one, two.’

‘It’s not a mic check, kitten.’ I chuckle and she pinches the shit out of my nipple. ‘Fuck!’

‘Fluffers?’

‘MATE!’ Fluffers yells, and I see him plop down on the ground, rolling onto his back as his tongue sticks out.

‘What’s he doing? I can hear him doing something, but all I see is black.’

‘He’s being a goofball, and he’s showing his tummy. A true alpha right there.’

Rez giggles. ‘It’s okay, Fluffers. There’s no need to worry about me leaving you. I’m in this with Knox and all of you until death, and who knows what will happen after, okay? So there shouldn’t be any doubts. Only happiness.’

‘Okay! Yup. I like that idea,’ Fluffers says, and starts running and playing. I’m kinda glad she can’t see the goofball as he runs around in circles.

‘Now where’s my resident sour puss?’ she asks, and I groan as Baron pushes forward.

‘Hello, my lovely mate. It’s good to finally speak to you one-on-one. This lazy sack of bones has been taking his time in connecting to you properly,’ Baron greets Rez and disses me at once.

Rez laughs and agrees with him, but she suddenly cries out and breaks the connection.

“Are you okay?” I lean down and look for any injuries.

“Ugh, yeah, just a sharp pain in my head. Sorry.”

‘It’s a power she will have to use to become stronger, just like her own magic. I’m assuming she over taxed herself on her first time. But she did an amazing job connecting with the small amount of thread that was there,’ Dusky explains.

‘What do you mean, the small amount of thread?’ I ask, starting to get really frustrated with these little advancements or fucking tasks my animals are giving me.

‘Think of it as a rope bridge that’s crossing a chasm. She’s crossed from one side of her cliff to your brain, the other cliff. The rope bridge only had one thread on it. Each time that she crosses, that bridge gains another rope and becomes stronger and therefore easier for her to cross and stay for longer,’ Dusky says slowly.

‘You’re a bigger asshole than Baron, aren’t you?’ I ask Dusky, and he scoffs.

“You really should be nicer to him.” Rez raises an eyebrow at me.

“Aww fuck, you heard that?” I ask, feeling like shit that I was caught red-handed.

“Yep. No cuddling for you,” she says and turns away from me.

“Oh, come on, kitten,” I plead.

I think this deep connection bullshit is gonna get me into more trouble than it’s worth.
