“We can come anytime you like. Seeing you behind the wheel is hot as hell.” He pulls me against him so I can feel the effect of my racing debut and I bite back a moan.

“Couldn’t have let me win though, could you?” I pout, trying to change the subject before I jump him with an audience. He grins, running a thumb over my bottom lip. I slip my tongue out and lick it, watching his gaze darken as I do so.

“Not a chance, sweetheart. I have a reputation to uphold.”

“You wouldn’t even lose at karting just to get laid?” I ask in disbelief.

“I didn’t need to, did I?” the smug bastard says as he winks and leads me back to the shack where we got our gear from.

Chapter Seventeen

It’s been four days since Brody left and it’s already four days too many. I feel like I’m moping around which is ridiculous, I’ll see him in a couple of weeks. But everywhere I go, I’m reminded of him. The pub, the beach, Maggie’s.

He raced into my life out of the blue and left his mark. Now I’m left with my wheels spinning, counting down the days until I get to see his cocky grin again.

“Earth to Rosie, where’d you go?” Maggie asks, leaning against the bar and waving her hand in my face to break my daze.

“Sorry, Mags. I was miles away. What did you want?” Grabbing the empty glasses off the bar, I put them by the sink and turn back to her. She has a knowing smile on her face and I feel my face flush a little.

“Just to settle the tab, the little terrors have finished their meals so we’d best be heading out before they get up to no good.”

I smile looking over at her kids, they may be a handful but they are so freaking adorable. And seeing Brody with them, holy cannoli, I didn’t stand a chance.

“No problem,” I say as I bring up her bill and pass her the card machine. It’s early afternoon and relatively quiet, just a few regulars enjoying a late lunch. I offered to work today to keep my mind busy. Being stuck at home alone just gives my mind time to wander to Brody and what he’s doing.

“So, have you heard from my brother?” she asks, with a grin. “Come on, you can’t tell me that wasn’t where you were a moment ago.”

“We spoke this morning, and he’s video calling me tonight. He’s twelve hours ahead, so he’ll be asleep right now,” I say as I check my watch yet again, before passing her the receipt and popping the other one in the till.

“That’s sweet. You know, I’ve never seen him put this much effort in before,” Maggie says, shooting a quick look over her shoulder to make sure the kids haven’t trashed the joint.

I roll my eyes but she stops me before I speak, “I’m serious, Rosie. He’s a great guy, an amazing uncle, but not the best at relationships. But this is different. If you didn’t mean something to him, he wouldn’t be making so much of an effort to carve out time for you. During the season, racing is all that is on his agenda. But not now.”

The smile that graces my face can’t be stopped, it’s a constant fixture whenever I think about the man himself. Maggie’s right. I may have had my doubts, but he has been nothing if not attentive and always messaging me to talk. The time apart sucks, but we’re making the best of it.

“He’s pretty special, Mags,” I admit. “But if time could just speed up a little, I’d sure appreciate it.”

Her soft laugh fills the air as she turns to call over her brood.

“He’ll be back in no time, don’t you worry about that.”

Not soon enough.

The bath is running, so I grab my glass of wine, my phone and my kindle and light a couple of candles. Checking the water temperature, I add a few more bubbles and turn the tap off.

Slipping off my clothes, I gingerly step into the bath, testing the temperature. With a contented sigh, I get all the way in, relaxing against my bath pillow and picking up my wine.

The soft sound of country music playing in the background has me smiling and humming along as I enjoy the peaceful moment and let all the stress of the day melt away.

Just when I feel myself almost dozing off, my phone pings and I smile. Reaching over to grab it, I see his name.

Brody: Is now a good time?

Rosie: As long as you don’t mind that I’m wet…

My phone rings almost instantly and I laugh before answering, “Hey, Hotshot.”

“You started without me?” he questions in that seductive drawl that I love.
